Musicians who have suffered from mental health issues. Amy Winehouse.

Written by on January 24, 2019

Amy Winehouse was a massively popular singer-songwriter in the first decade of the 21st century. Songs including Back To Black, You Know I’m No Good and her cover of Valerie endeared her to millions. She released two albums before dying to one particular complication related to alcohol poisoning, addiction, in 2011.

“Addiction is a complex condition, a brain disease that is manifested by compulsive substance use despite harmful consequence. People with addiction (severe substance use disorder) have an intense focus on using a certain substance(s), such as alcohol or drugs, to the point that it takes over their life. They keep using alcohol or a drug even when they know it will cause problems.” (1)

In her article in Psychology Today, Lynn Phillips describes how “excessive use isn’t the only way to die of your addiction. Quitting a habit can fatally exacerbate latent health problems caused by previous substance abuse. Winehouse’s family worried that her alcohol use had put such a strain on her system that quitting cold turkey caused her heart to give out on her.” (2)

What is being conveyed here is that if you, or anyone you know might be showing signs of being addicted to a substance, legal or otherwise, please seek help. We all love and miss you, Amy god bless 0800 917 650
